What's a good typing speed?
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Beginner |
| 30–40 | Average |
| 40–60 | Good |
| 60–80 | Fast |
| 80+ | Professional |
How WPM is measured
A “word” is standardised as five characters (including spaces), so WPM is your correctly-typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. This test counts only the characters you type correctly, which means mistakes pull your speed down — a fairer measure than raw keystrokes.
Type faster
- Touch type — all ten fingers, eyes on the screen, not the keyboard.
- Accuracy first. Keep it above 95%, then build speed; fixing typos costs more time than typing carefully.
- Practise short and often — a few focused minutes daily beats occasional long sessions.
