How the test works
Click once to start. The box turns red — wait. After a random delay it flips to green, and the timer starts the instant it does. Click as fast as you can; the gap between green and your click is your reaction time. Click while it's still red and it's a false start — no peeking at the rhythm. The test runs five rounds and reports your average, because a single attempt is too noisy to mean much.
What's a good reaction time?

These are for a simple reaction (one signal, one response). Real-world reactions that require a choice — which way to dodge, which key to press — are naturally slower.
Why your score jumps around
Reaction time is genuinely variable. Anticipation, caffeine, fatigue, how close you sit, mouse vs. touchscreen, and your monitor's refresh rate all move it by tens of milliseconds. On a 60 Hz screen a single frame is ~16.7 ms, so part of your "reaction" is just waiting for the next refresh — a 144 Hz or 240 Hz display genuinely shaves a few milliseconds off. The averaging here smooths most of that noise out.
Can you train it?
To a point. Being rested, warmed up and distraction-free helps immediately, and reacting to a known signal improves with practice. Faster hardware — a high-polling-rate mouse and a high-refresh monitor — trims a little latency. But your nervous system sets the floor: signal to eye, eye to brain, brain to finger takes time no setup can erase.

The human average is ~250–270 ms. Under 250 ms is good, under 220 ms excellent; pro gamers and athletes often hit 150–200 ms.

Why does my time vary so much?

Does a higher refresh rate help?
A little — a 144/240 Hz screen shows the green sooner than 60 Hz. But most of your reaction time is biology, not the display.
