How the test works
Stick drift means the analog stick reports movement while nobody is touching it. This test reads the same raw axis values your games receive, samples them continuously for 6 seconds, and reports three numbers per stick:
- Resting deflection — how far from true centre the stick sits on average. This is your drift.
- Peak — the furthest it strayed during the test, which is what a game's deadzone has to cover.
- Noise — how jittery the signal is; a worn sensor is often noisy before it visibly drifts.
Reading your result

Why sticks drift
Most controllers — including the PS5 DualSense, Xbox Series pads and Joy-Cons — use potentiometer sticks: a contact brushes across a resistive track to measure position. That track physically wears away with use, and worn spots read as phantom movement. Dust, skin oils and a weakening centring spring make it worse. Heavy daily play can wear sticks within months, which is why drift is so common on controllers that otherwise feel new.
Replacement Hall-effect modules measure position magnetically with no contact at all, so they can't wear the same way — worth considering if you're already opening the controller for a repair.
Fixing drift, from easiest to hardest
1. The two-minute fixes (any controller)
- Power off, then rotate the stick firmly around its full range 10–15 times.
- Short bursts of compressed air around the stick base while wiggling it.
- Update the controller firmware, then re-run the test above.
2. Recalibrate
- Switch: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks.
- Xbox: update and test in the Xbox Accessories app.
- PS5: no user calibration, but a firmware update (Settings → Accessories) sometimes helps.
3. Clean under the stick
- Lift the rubber skirt at the stick base gently and clean underneath with isopropyl alcohol on a swab. Let it dry fully before powering on.
4. Mask it with a deadzone
- If drift measured 5–10%, set the in-game deadzone just above the peak value from your test. It costs a little fine control but hides the drift completely.
5. Repair or replace
- Joy-Con: Nintendo repairs drift free in many regions — check their support site first.
- DualSense: covered by warranty in year one; after that, stick-module replacement is a common, affordable repair.
- Xbox: out-of-warranty module replacement, or a controller with Hall-effect sticks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my controller has stick drift?
Typical symptoms: your character or camera creeps on its own, menus scroll by themselves, or your aim pulls in one direction. Run the test above to confirm — under 5% resting deflection is healthy, above 10% is significant drift.
Can stick drift be fixed without opening the controller?
Often, yes. Rotate the stick firmly through its full range, use compressed air around the base, update firmware, and recalibrate if your platform supports it. If drift persists, raise the in-game deadzone above your measured value, or replace the stick module.
Why do PS5 DualSense controllers drift?
Like most pads, the DualSense uses potentiometer sticks whose resistive tracks physically wear. Heavy daily play can wear them within months. Drift-proof Hall-effect replacement modules exist, and persistent drift inside the first year is covered by Sony's warranty.
Does Nintendo fix Joy-Con drift for free?

Will raising the deadzone fix drift?
