How to test your microphone
- Click “Start mic test” and choose Allow when the browser asks for microphone access.
- Speak, tap the mic, or play audio. The level meter should jump and the waveform should wiggle in time with the sound.
- Wrong device? Pick another from the input dropdown — it lists every microphone your system sees.
- Press Stop when you're done; the microphone is released immediately.
Microphone not working? Run through this
- Browser permission: click the mic/camera icon in the address bar and set it to Allow, then retry. This fixes most cases.
- Right device selected: a headset, webcam and built-in mic can all be connected — switch the dropdown until the meter moves.
- OS mute or low level: check your operating system's sound input settings; the device may be muted or turned down.
- Another app has it: Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS can hold the mic. Close them and retry.
- Hardware: reseat the cable or USB plug; on a headset, check the inline mute switch.
What the meter is showing
The level meter is the loudness your mic is capturing right now; the peak holds the loudest moment so you can check for clipping. For voice calls, aim for the meter to sit comfortably in the middle on normal speech — if it's pinned to the far right even when you talk softly, lower your input gain to avoid distortion. The waveform shows the actual sound wave, a quick visual confirmation that real audio (not just noise) is coming through.
