What your BMI means
Body mass index is a quick screen that compares your weight to your height. Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. It is a useful general guide, but it does not account for muscle mass, frame or body-fat distribution, so treat it as a starting point rather than a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a useful general screen but it does not distinguish muscle from fat. Very muscular people can read as overweight, so use it alongside other measures.
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. This tool shows the exact healthy weight range for your height.
